Indian is one of Ron's oldest pen and ink drawings. It illustrates an indian unlike any you may have seen. He captures his features using a cross-hatch effect with the crow quill dip pen.

Kelly's PlaceKelly's PlaceKelly's place is a gorgeous depiction of a mountainside cabin.  This beautiful pen and ink hand water colored drawing depicts two cabins and even the laundry hung out to dry.  It speaks of peace and relaxation on a warm summer day.
Lone Horse GrazingLone Horse GrazingRon painted this while living in upstate New York.  There were many farms on the countryside.  He captured this lonely horse grazing near some newly painted barns.  It looks as if they still have some more painting to do!
Masterful Work in MotionMasterful Work in MotionThis painting was created in 2009 to fulfill a request for Ron to paint art for the back cover of the Lake & Sumter Counties Florida's Heartland coffee table book.  As quoted in the book, "Over the years Ron Colgrove's style has evolved from architectural-type renderings to a free style of art, to include action in his oil paintings. The back cover of this book shows examples of his masterful work in motion."1
Mont Saint Michel, FranceMont Saint Michel, FranceNormandy's answer to the pyramids, this 11th century Benedictine monastery carved out of natural granite is one of France’s—and the world’s—most spectacular sights.  This crow quill pen and ink original was completed after approximately 80 man hours.
Neuschwanstein Castle, GermanyNeuschwanstein Castle, GermanyNeuschwanstein Castle near Schwangau, Germany, was completed by King Ludwig II, (mad Ludwig) of Bavaria in 1869 long after the age of fortress castles. This crow quill pen and ink original piece of art took Ron over 120 man hours to complete and is illustrated here.

Red Tied UpRed Tied UpRon painted this while living in upstate New York.  He captured this big red horse patiently waiting for his owner to come and retrieve him.  "Red" has won awards at a few art shows.
Roycroft's ChapelRoycroft's Chapel"The Chapel served as a meeting hall for the Roycrofters. It housed an art collection which created a gallery-like effect as background for display of the Roycroft merchandise offered for sale. Today the Chapel, in addition to serving as the Aurora Town Museum, also houses the Town Hall. All town government functions now originate at this location... The museum is maintained by the Aurora Historical Society." 1
SailboatSailboatSailboat illustrates Ron's growth into non-architectural drawings including flow and movement. Just looking at the drawing makes you feel the wind and smell the salt.  Notice the seagull racing the boat in the wind.
St Joseph's CathedralSt Joseph's Cathedral"Construction began in 1851, and it served as the "Bishop's Church" until 1912, when St. Joseph New Cathedral was built on Delaware at Utica. In 1977, the New Cathedral was demolished, and this building again became the diocesan Cathedral." 1
Stuffed AnimalsStuffed AnimalsThis painting shows various stuffed animals any child may own including Raggedy Ann, doggie, teddie bear, and a kitty.  Ron created it for his grandchild's bedroom.
The Butler House, Buffalo, NYThe Butler House, Buffalo, NY"...The Williams-Butler mansion ...is the jewel of the neighborhood, built on what was the most prestigious corner in the city."1 It is now the home of many community events including weddings, etc.
The Castle of Sigmaringen, GermanyThe Castle of Sigmaringen, GermanyThe Castle of Sigmaringen on the Danube in Baden-Wuttenberg, German, the cradle of the Hohenzollern Dynasty, was the impressive home of the Princess of Hohenzollern. Built on a high rock ledge, this magnificent structure is straight from medieval legend.  It was originally done using a flexible crow quill dip pen taking approximately 100 man-hours. 
The Martin House, Buffalo, NYThe Martin House, Buffalo, NY"The Martin House Complex is a prime example of a Prairie House, a revolutionary design developed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the first decade of the 20th century." 1  This rendition was done with crow quill pen and ink and later with watercolor.
The New Roycroft Inn, East Aurora, NYThe New Roycroft Inn, East Aurora, NYThe Roycroft Inn became a National Landmark in 1986. It underwent a tremendous fire in the early 1990's and thanks to the support of the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation it re-opened in June 1995 beautifully expanded. Ron produced a pen and ink drawing of this fabulous landmark. The drawing illustrates the Inn as it stands today.

The SwingThe SwingRon's family remembers this swing from days of ole.  If you pumped it far enough out over the steep cliff it made you feel like you were flying in free space! This pen and ink drawing is a fond memory of Ron's granchildren's adventures!  In honor of this memory, he produced an 18" x 24" pen and ink water color drawing of this family landmark. 
Tree StudyTree Study

Ron drew Tree Study as part of a teaching lesson for younger artists. It illustrates the beautiful tree with realistic ink strokes. He started with the trunk and added limbs until the picture was filled out. But he was careful not to fill in too much of the trunk so he could later draw in the branches that crossed it. The original still hangs in his home today.

Pen and Ink

Colgrove’s unique pen and ink technique has garnered praise from the art community for years. Using a crow quill flexible dip pen, Colgrove has been able to create distinctive pieces of quill pen art that have amazing depth and detail. Many of his pen and ink works feature medieval castles and cathedrals, including his highly acclaimed collection of four European castles.

Combination: Pen and Ink & Watercolor

All of the pieces in this watercolor gallery were originally drawn using pen and ink and finished with finished with hand watercolor. These pieces featuring ornate architecture exhibit a keen attention to detail.
