Neuschwanstein Castle near Schwangau, Germany, was completed by King Ludwig II, (mad Ludwig) of Bavaria in 1869 long after the age of fortress castles. The eccentric King, who was an idolater and patron of composer Richard Wagner, called in a decorator of the Munich Opera to design the profusion of turrets, watchtowers and battlements for his dream castle. Neuschwanstein Castle is a romantic architectural expression which dominated German art and literature during much of the 19th century.
The original drawing by Ron Colgrove is 40” x 30” and was drawn in pen and ink using a flexible crow quill dip pen taking approximately 120 man-hours. It was then reproduced using an off-set press onto 24” x 18” 24 lb art paper and hand water colored. Limited edition giclée prints of this pen and ink with watercolor are available.
